Family Anseranatidae

The magpie goose is basically a "living fossil" (a terminology I hate but one which is also useful). It diverged from its common ancestors long before the other ducks and geese. It is the sole representative of its family. Once found in southern Australia it is now mostly restricted to the wet tropics. It was a staple food item of the first people and I can attest to its tastiness.
