Family Burhinidae

The family Burhinidae is represented by ten species in two genera. The family is mostly temperate to tropical and found in Africa, Australia, South America and Southeast Asia. They are medium to large birds, typically reluctant to fly when approached. Most lay eggs on the ground, the young are extremely cryptic when they hatch. Adults have loud, raucous cries, and are often heard at night.
