Family Enoplosidae

Old wives used to be classifed with the butterflyfishes in the family Chaetodontidae but they are now considered sufficiently different to be classified in a family of their own. There is only one species - Enoplosus armatus. The common name "Old wife" in a piece of terribly sexist and misogynistic phraseology, refers to the grinding sound a hooked Old wife makes with its teeth. This species is restricted to temperate waters of Australia.
