Ryan Photographic - Ommastrephidae - Arrow squid
Family Ommastrephidae
The family Ommastrephidae is represented by 25 species in 11 genera. They are very important economically with one species, Todarodes pacificus, accounting for half of all global squid catch.
The Humboldt squid is one of the largest squid and apparently may hunt cooperatively. I dived with Humboldt squid in the Sea of Cortez at night (in a cage!). Unfortunately they were scared away by a large pod of pilot whales which presumably feed on them - so - no photos. Humboldt squid possess giant nerve fibers and as result have been the subject of research into nerve transmission.
